Currently, eight Sheffield-based public sector organisations are collaborating on the Buy4Sheffield initiative:

Sheffield City Council is the third largest metropolitan district council in England with a population of 530,000 people. We spend around £540 million per annum on goods and services. We already have an excellent record for encouraging a diverse supply market with 56% of our spend going to business and the voluntary sector based in Sheffield. We are committed to working with all potential suppliers to help them be more successful and to have excellent business relationships.

NHS Sheffield is the city’s guardian of NHS spending and champion for better health.

With a budget of £850 million, we are responsible for ensuring local NHS services reflect needs and offer value for money as well as helping to improve health and health services. Our aim is to save lives by reducing the health inequalities that exist in Sheffield and in doing so make it the healthiest city in England. To achieve this, we’ll work in close partnership with health professionals to look at new approaches to services and we’ll involve the public in their design.

We commission services from GP practices, dental practices, opticians, pharmacists, hospital trusts, mental health care providers, independent and voluntary providers.

The University of Sheffield have a non pay expenditure budget of over £100 million and from January to October 2008 the Procurement Office handled in excess of 50 tendering opportunities over £50,000, with a much larger proportion under this value.  Whilst the University is bound by UK and EU Directives, the University’s Procurement Department remain committed to sourcing and including local suppliers in these opportunities, and warmly welcomes expressions of interest from potential suppliers.

Sheffield Hallam University is one of the country's largest universities. We run over 600 courses, have 30,000 students (of which 3,500 are international students) and employ 4,000 staff. The University has an annual turnover approaching £200 million and around 40% of its expenditure on goods and services is with organisations in South Yorkshire and the surrounding area.

Sheffield College has a major presence in Sheffield, with 23,000 students over four main sites across the city.  The College annual spend of £14m is on everything from IT to AV, construction to sports equipment, and much more.  The College acknowledges the value of engaging local suppliers, supporting the local economy and appreciating the environmental benefits of ‘buying local’.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue covers the four metropolitan districts of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, which have a combined population of 1.3 million and we employ 1,000 staff throughout the country and at our headquarters and training centre in Sheffield. We spend an average of £15 million per annum on goods and services, 32% of which going to local companies and organisations.

Over £2 billion per annum is spent on supplies, services, equipment and capital assets. The Force is committed to meeting the National Procurement Strategy for Police which includes promoting sustainability and supporting diversity in procurement.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive is the organisation which promotes and co-ordinates public transport in South Yorkshire. It builds and manages transport infrastructure, works with transport operators and local councils to improve services, provides ticketing products and information services, and is involved in strategic planning.
Although SYPTE does not run any transport services directly it leases the Supertram system to Stagecoach, who run it on the SYPTE’s behalf. It also co-manages the Northern Rail franchise, which runs many of the commuter services in South Yorkshire.

It employs 368 members of staff across 17 sites in South Yorkshire. For the year ending 31 March 2009 its expenditure budget was £98 million, of which £17 million was allocated through tendered processes.
